On January 15, 1966, Nigeria experienced its first military coup led by the "five majors"-predominantly Igbo officers who claimed to be ending tribalism and corruption. They killed Prime Minister Balewa, Western Premier Akintola, Northern Premier Ahmadu Bello, and many northern military officers. Major General John Aguiyi-Ironsi, an Igbo and commanding officer of the Nigerian army, quickly took control. Ironsi's actions heightened northern suspicions of an Igbo conspiracy. Gowon responded with a coastal blockade and economic sanctions. On May 30, Ojukwu declared the Independent Republic of Biafra. The civil war lasted two and a half years, ending with Biafra's surrender on January 12, 1970. The war claimed 1-3 million lives, mostly through starvation, and displaced another 3 million. Despite fears, no genocide followed. Gowon emphasized reconciliation, declaring "no victors, no vanquished" in this "war of brothers." Oil Boom and Bust: The Paradox of Plenty (1970-1999)

Nigeria experienced unprecedented economic expansion in the early 1970s following the civil war, driven by petroleum development. The Gowon administration significantly increased oil production, with output nearly doubling from 417,000 barrels per day in 1966 to 823 million barrels by 1974. State revenue from petroleum increased dramatically from 166 million naira in 1970 to 5.3 billion naira by 1976. This growth accelerated when Nigeria joined OPEC in 1971, followed by the 1973 oil crisis that increased prices from $3.80 to $14.70 per barrel. Petroleum soon represented 82% of government income, creating significant economic concentration in a single resource. This petroleum dependence introduced major economic vulnerabilities. During oil price declines in 1976-1979 and the early 1980s, the economy experienced severe difficulties. The petroleum boom led to decreased focus on economic diversification - agricultural output declined, manufacturing decreased from 9.4% of GDP in 1970 to 7.0% in 1973/74, and Nigeria began importing previously exported agricultural products. The petroleum economy transformed Nigeria into a state primarily funded by external resource revenues rather than domestic taxation. This economic structure reduced public accountability and enabled financial mismanagement, as government authority derived from resource control rather than public support. Economic challenges contributed to political instability. When Gowon delayed the promised transition to civilian rule in 1976, military officers led by Colonel Garba and Lieutenant Colonel Yar'adua implemented a leadership change, installing General Murtala Mohammed as head of state. Mohammed's administration promised reforms and democratic transition. Following his untimely passing in February 1976, Lieutenant General Olusegun Obasanjo continued these initiatives. Their combined administration successfully transferred power to an elected civilian government in 1979, beginning with constitutional reforms in 1975 and culminating in the 1979 elections. The National Party of Nigeria (NPN) secured electoral victory, gaining control of seven states and majority representation in the legislature. Obasanjo transferred authority to President Shehu Shagari on October 1, 1979, concluding thirteen years of military administration. The Second Republic faced severe economic challenges when oil production decreased from 2 million barrels per day in 1980 to 1.3 million in 1983. The economy contracted by 8.5% between 1981-1983, while inflation reached 30-50%. Public sector wages faced significant delays, and living standards declined substantially. Despite electoral irregularities, the new administration took office in October 1983. However, public dissatisfaction led to calls for change. On December 31, 1983, a military transition occurred, installing Major General Muhammadu Buhari as head of state, beginning a fifteen-year period of military administration.

Democracy's Difficult Path: Nigeria Since 1999

The military coup that ousted the Second Republic on December 31, 1983, ushered in fifteen years of military rule under three successive regimes: General Muhammadu Buhari, General Ibrahim Babangida (IBB), and General Sani Abacha. These regimes presided over Nigeria's continued economic decline, particularly after implementing the Structural Adjustment Program in 1985. Rather than reforming the government, they entrenched corruption and maintained power through oppression and manipulation of democratic processes. Ibrahim Babangida's regime implemented the Structural Adjustment Program (SAP) in 1986, which produced mixed economic results. While it reduced debt service from 38.7% of federal revenue to 30% by 1988, boosted agricultural output from 1% to 5.3% annual growth, and increased local sourcing of raw materials from 38.5% to 50%, the SAP devastated ordinary Nigerians. The naira collapsed from N1=$1 in 1985 to N22=$1 by 1994, while inflation soared to 40-70%. Per capita income plummeted from $778 to just $105. Babangida's transition program proved frustratingly manipulative, with constantly shifting timelines and procedures. The June 12, 1993 presidential election proved remarkably peaceful and fair, with wealthy Yoruba businessman M.K.O. Abiola winning 58% of votes nationwide. Faced with relinquishing power, Babangida annulled the results on June 23, triggering unprecedented nationwide protests. On November 17, 1993, General Sani Abacha seized power from Shonekan's Interim Governing Council. Abacha's response to opposition was brutal-dissolving union executive committees, outlawing NADECO, arresting pro-democracy leaders, and imprisoning Abiola, who would die in custody in 1998. The execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni leaders on November 10, 1995, solidified Abacha's reputation as a tyrant. The Ogoni, a small ethnic group of about 500,000 people in Rivers State, had organized under Saro-Wiwa's Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) to demand greater autonomy, environmental protection, and a fair share of oil revenues extracted from their lands. After Abacha's death, General Abdulsalami Abubakar quickly dissolved the five political parties, released political prisoners, and set Nigeria on a path to democratic transition. In the staggered elections of early 1999, the PDP emerged dominant, winning twenty-one of thirty-six governorships, majorities in both houses of the National Assembly, and the presidency. Olusegun Obasanjo, recently released from prison, defeated the joint AD/APP candidate Olu Falae with over 62 percent of the vote. Obasanjo's presidency yielded mixed results. Despite economic improvements, most Nigerians remained impoverished. Religious tensions persisted, with northern states implementing stricter shari'a laws allowing punishments like hand amputation for theft and stoning for adultery. Corruption remained rampant, with several state governors impeached for graft. "419" scams became Nigeria's international trademark, particularly internet advance fee frauds targeting foreigners. On May 29, 2007, Nigeria witnessed its first civilian-to-civilian power transfer as Olusegun Obasanjo stepped down after two terms and Umaru Yar'Adua was inaugurated as president. The PDP extended its political dominance, controlling both federal houses and 28 of 36 state governments. While this transition suggested democratic stability and the anti-corruption crackdown appeared promising, deeper examination revealed concerning patterns of political manipulation. The elections proceeded with minimal violence but were marred by irregularities and vote-rigging that international observers deemed severely flawed. Despite the negative electoral prospects, several positive developments emerged. The peaceful transfer of power from a southern Christian (Obasanjo) to a northern Muslim (Yar'Adua) suggested the power-sharing arrangement between ethno-religious regions remained intact, potentially reducing tensions. Though Nigeria still faced extreme poverty, waning political consciousness, and inadequate access to medical and educational facilities, the functioning checks and balances offered hope for longer-term stability.

Nigeria's Global Influence: A Rising African Power

Nigeria's influence extends globally through its diaspora communities, strategic importance, and economic power. As Africa's most populous nation with significant oil wealth, Nigeria maintained a non-aligned stance during the Cold War while pursuing Africa-centered foreign policies. The Hausa diaspora, rooted in pre-colonial trade networks, established communities across the African savanna. Through commerce and intermarriage, they created extensive networks while maintaining homeland ties, making Hausa the lingua franca of regional trade. Before the mid-nineteenth century, Nigerian migration was largely involuntary through the transatlantic slave trade. Despite enslavement, these communities preserved elements of their culture while adapting to the Americas. Olaudah Equiano, born in Igbo territory around 1745, became a prominent abolitionist whose 1789 autobiography helped fuel the anti-slavery movement in Britain. Modern Nigerian migration has been primarily voluntary and often temporary. Since the 1980s, many professionals have sought opportunities abroad, with over 164,000 Nigerians in the United States and 88,000 in the United Kingdom by early 2000s. These expatriates maintain strong homeland connections, generating annual remittances of $1.3-4 billion - Nigeria's second-largest source of foreign exchange after oil. Nigeria's diplomatic influence stems from its diversity, population, and resources. After its civil war, Nigerian foreign policy shifted toward non-alignment and African unity, opposing colonialism and promoting regional integration. During the 1970s oil boom, as the world's sixth-largest oil producer, Nigeria leveraged its economic power to challenge apartheid and support African independence. The Nigerian film industry, Nollywood, produces over 2,000 films annually - surpassing both Hollywood and Bollywood in volume. Since the early 2000s, these predominantly English-language films have gained widespread African and international audiences, strengthening Nigeria's cultural influence globally. Through centuries of migration, Nigerians have significantly influenced global social and cultural development. Their communities, established long before modern Nigeria's boundaries, maintain strong cultural ties while contributing to their adopted societies, demonstrating Nigeria's lasting impact on world history.
