J.R.R. Tolkien was born in 1892 in Bloemfontein, in what was then the Orange Free State, and was taken to England as a small child after his father’s death. His mother’s later death left him and his brother under guardianship, an early experience of loss that shaped the emotional undertones of his fiction. He was educated at King Edward’s School in Birmingham and later at Exeter College, Oxford, where he studied classics before turning to English language and literature.
