Jack Carr is an American thriller author and former U.S. Navy SEAL platoon commander best known for The Terminal List, which launched his New York Times bestselling James Reece series and was adapted for television. His fiction centers on military suspense, counterterrorism, and espionage, drawing heavily on his special operations experience.
Jack Carr built his second career on two ambitions he has said were fixed early: serving as a Navy SEAL and becoming an author. Raised in a military family by a mother who worked as a librarian, he grew up reading thriller and adventure writers while preparing himself for a life in uniform. In that sense, his formative education was dual, shaped by books at home and by the long apprenticeship of BUD/S and Naval Special Warfare. He entered the Navy in 1996, spent roughly two decades in the SEAL teams, served first as an enlisted sniper and later as an officer, and deployed repeatedly to Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Philippines before retiring from active duty in 2016. The decisive turning point came in that transition out of service, when he began turning operational experience, research habits, and the emotional residue of war into fiction.
