Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston on January 19, 1809, and his life was marked early by instability. His parents, both actors, died when he was very young, and he was taken in by John and Frances Allan of Richmond, Virginia, though he was never formally adopted. He received a strong early education in Britain and later in Virginia, developing a lasting command of language and classical literature. In 1826 he entered the University of Virginia, but financial conflict with John Allan, compounded by gambling debts, cut his studies short. A brief period in the army and another at West Point followed, each ending in rupture and helping confirm that literature, rather than a conventional profession, would be his central pursuit.
