Deborah Harkness is an American historian of science and medicine and novelist whose work spans early modern Europe, alchemy, and fantasy. She is best known for the All Souls series, beginning with A Discovery of Witches, a New York Times bestseller adapted for television, which broadened her international readership.
Deborah Harkness built her career at the intersection of scholarship and storytelling. Raised outside Philadelphia, she studied at Mount Holyoke College, earned an M.A. from Northwestern University in 1990, completed a Ph.D. at the University of California, Davis, in 1994, and later taught at Colgate, UC Davis, Oxford’s Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, Northwestern University Medical School, and the University of Southern California, where she is now Professor Emerita of History. Her academic work centered on the history of science, medicine, magic, and books in early modern Europe, and that long apprenticeship in archives became the foundation of her fiction.
