Adam Tooze is a British historian and Columbia University professor whose work spans modern economic, political, and global history, from Nazi Germany and the world wars to the 2008 financial crisis and COVID-19. His notable books include The Wages of Destruction, The Deluge, Crashed, and Shutdown, with awards including the Wolfson, Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and Lionel Gelber Prize.

Adam Tooze is an English-born historian shaped by a transnational upbringing. Born in London in 1967 and raised largely in Heidelberg, he studied economics at King’s College Cambridge, spent 1989 to 1991 at the Free University Berlin, and earned a Ph.D. in economic history from the London School of Economics in 1996. After thirteen years teaching at Cambridge and a period at Yale, he moved to Columbia, where he is the Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis Professor of History, director of the European Institute, and chair of the Committee on Global Thought.
