Where Are the Cows? Systems Thinking and Operational Logic

Best quote from Where Are the Cows? Systems Thinking and Operational Logic

    “

If you want to improve operations, you have to stop looking at what influences a result and start looking at what causes it. Most people think in correlations, but GNP doesn't make milk; cows make milk.

    Input question

I want to use logic and reason as a base for my understanding in systems thinking. I'm trying to put together a presentation to solidify a creative position to improve operations. I plan on getting my green belt in six sigma to help with that and maybe one day open my own business helping establishments cut cost and improve their operations.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Factors thinking involves creating lists of variables like motivation or teacher quality that influence a result without explaining the actual process. In contrast, operational thinking focuses on the mechanics of how operations work by identifying what causes a result rather than just what influences it. By asking "Where are the cows?", you shift your focus from abstract correlations, like GNP growth, to the actual physical entities and processes that drive production and success.

Systems thinking serves as the bedrock of the Six Sigma journey by encouraging a move beyond simple correlations. Instead of linking unrelated data points, practitioners use causal logic to understand the operational mechanics of a business. This approach allows you to see how operations truly function, ensuring that process improvement efforts are based on the actual stream of experiences and physical causes that lead to specific outcomes in a complex system.

Causal logic is essential because it distinguishes between things that merely affect the speed of a process and the things that actually make the process happen. For example, while GNP might correlate with milk production, it is the cows that actually produce the milk. By focusing on causal logic, business leaders can stop looking at lists of critical success factors and start managing the actual mechanics and processes that drive their specific operational results.
