The Yam was a sophisticated, high-speed communication and postal system established by Genghis Khan and his successors during the 13th century. Often compared to a medieval version of fiber-optic cables, this massive infrastructure project utilized a network of riders and horses across the Mongolian steppe. It allowed the emperor to receive updates from distant regions like Europe or China almost in real-time, serving as the backbone for imperial conquest and continental-scale governance.
The Yam was incredibly efficient for its time, with riders capable of covering between 200 to 300 kilometers in a single day. This translates to roughly 120 to 190 miles daily on horseback, a feat of sheer willpower and organization. While other parts of the world relied on messages that took months to arrive, the Mongol Empire used this system to maintain rapid contact across its vast territories during the 1200s.
The Yam was so advanced and effective that its influence extended far beyond the peak of the Mongol Empire. Even after the empire fell apart, the structure of this high-speed postal system remained in use in Russia for several centuries. This long-term adoption highlights how Genghis Khan’s infrastructure project was ahead of its time, leaving a lasting legacy on the administrative and communication history of the region.

I love the fact that I can get useful, condensed, information and ideas in a 8 - 15 minute podcast style audio. I'm not a general fan of podcasts because of all the fluff, but this cuts through all that.

I am finishing up my doctorate, and have to read a lot of unfamiliar material... With BeFreed, you simply enter a prompt, and the app finds source material for you and generates an audio podcast. I find the process in BeFreed to be more streamlined than NotebookLM.
