The Virginia Iroquois primarily consisted of Iroquoian-speaking tribes such as the Nottoway and the Meherrin. Located south of the English settlements along the Nottoway and Meherrin Rivers, these groups were distinct from the coastal Powhatan Confederacy. While they lived in Virginia, they were part of a larger linguistic family that included the Haudenosaunee in New York and the Cherokee to the west, maintaining a unique cultural identity during a period of rapid colonial expansion.
The Nottoway and Meherrin shared a core linguistic DNA with the famous Iroquois Confederacy, or Haudenosaunee, despite being physically separated by Algonquian and Siouan-speaking groups. The Nottoway, who referred to themselves as the Cheroenhaka, viewed this linguistic identity as a vital part of their heritage. This connection linked them to a massive cultural network stretching from the northern colonies down to the western territories of the Cherokee.
By the early 1700s, the Nottoway tribe was forced to navigate a world changing at a terrifying speed due to English colonization. As they witnessed neighboring tribes being pushed out of their ancestral lands, the Cheroenhaka had to develop strategic ways to survive and preserve their community. Their history in the 18th century is defined by this struggle for persistence while living just inland from the expanding English presence at Jamestown.

I love the fact that I can get useful, condensed, information and ideas in a 8 - 15 minute podcast style audio. I'm not a general fan of podcasts because of all the fluff, but this cuts through all that.
