    Frequently Asked Questions

The Neolithic Revolution was a fundamental shift in human history where mobile hunter-gatherer groups stopped chasing food and started making it. This transition allowed humans to settle down permanently for the first time in roughly 300,000 years of history. By producing food rather than gathering it, early societies created a chain reaction that led to the development of permanent villages and eventually the first complex urban centers.

For about 95 percent of human history, humans lived as mobile hunter-gatherers who followed seasonal patterns and animal herds. In contrast, early civilizations were defined by settling in one place and building permanent structures. This shift from a nomadic existence to an urban one only began about 12,000 years ago, representing a total reboot of the human experience that moved us away from the woods and into organized cities.

In historical terms, a civilization is defined by five specific technical traits rather than just being a social compliment. These include the development of a writing system, the establishment of a government, the production of surplus food, a clear division of labor, and the rise of urban centers. These characteristics emerged as a result of the Urban Revolution, transforming small agricultural villages into complex, organized societies with specialized roles.

Surplus food was the essential spark for the Urban Revolution and the rise of early civilizations. When early humans began making food instead of hunting it, they were able to produce more than they needed for immediate survival. This surplus supported larger populations and allowed for a division of labor, where not everyone had to be a farmer. These factors combined to create the first permanent cities and complex social structures.
