Explore The Physics of Clutter and Kinetic Storage Theory. Learn why possessions expand to fill your home and how to improve your home organization systems.

Our possessions, much like a gas in a vacuum, will invariably expand to fill every available cubic inch of the container they are placed in. The problem isn't the size of our homes, but the nature of our systems.
The laws of staying organized and clutter free

Kinetic Storage Theory is the observation that our possessions behave much like a gas in a vacuum, invariably expanding to fill every available cubic inch of the container they are placed in. This theory suggests that regardless of the square footage of your home, your belongings will eventually reach a state of total saturation. Understanding this physical law helps explain why simply adding more closets or a larger garage rarely solves the underlying problem of household chaos.
Spatial saturation occurs because of the nature of our systems rather than the size of our living spaces. Even when moving into a new home with empty cabinets and vast hallways, possessions tend to accumulate until the space is brimming with gadgetry and temporary piles. This phenomenon suggests that the issue isn't a lack of storage, but a deeper physical and social behavior where belongings expand to occupy whatever volume is available to them.
While often used interchangeably, cleaning and organizing are fundamentally different disciplines. Cleaning typically involves the surface level of tidying, such as addressing a stray sock on the floor. Organizing, however, requires a deeper look at the physics of clutter and the systems we use to manage our belongings. To achieve a triumph of the will over a junk drawer, one must move beyond simple tidying to understand the social systems and physical laws governing our space.
