Explore the history of the Mars, Sweden’s sunken fortress. Learn about the Makalös, its 1564 explosion, and its discovery as a missing link in naval warfare.

Finding the Mars is like finding a time capsule from the exact moment when the world stopped just trying to board enemy ships and started trying to blow them out of the water.
The war ship Mars magnificent

The Mars, also known as the Makalös or 'Matchless,' was a massive Swedish warship built in the mid-1500s. It was considered a floating fortress and a symbol of power, representing a significant escalation in the Northern European naval arms race. Named after the god of war, this vessel was so advanced for its time that it fundamentally changed the way naval warfare functioned before its sudden destruction in 1564.
Despite its intimidating status, the Mars did not survive its first major engagement in 1564. The ship met a cinematic and violent end when it went down in a massive ball of fire. The explosion was so powerful that witnesses claimed the foremast was launched into the air like a bolt from a crossbow. Following this catastrophic event, the pride of the Swedish navy vanished beneath the Baltic Sea for nearly 450 years.
The Mars is often described as a 'missing link' in maritime history because it provides rare insights into 16th-century naval technology. Due to the specific environmental conditions at the bottom of the Baltic Sea, the wreck has been remarkably preserved. Its discovery allows researchers to study a vessel that was loaded with gold and silver coins and served as a precursor to the famous warships of the 17th century.
