The episode explores a modern reimagining of the Faustian bargain through the novel Phoning Faust. It follows college student Dian Faust, who accidentally dials the mark of the beast while trying to reach a crisis hotline. Instead of a counselor, she connects with Memphis, a character who claims to be a scammer but is actually Mephistopheles, Hell’s top agent, lurking within the pixels of her smartphone.
In this tech-twisted update on the classic tale, selling your soul is no longer a grand event involving parchment and quills. Modern fiction suggests that a Faustian bargain can be as simple and invasive as clicking 'Accept' on terms and conditions or answering a wrong number during a moment of loneliness. The devil now reaches victims through the digital devices they never put down, making the experience feel more personal and constant.
The antagonist is Memphis, a modern iteration of Mephistopheles. Rather than appearing in a cloud of sulfur, he presents himself as a chatty scam caller stuck in a bus stop bathroom. As Hell’s top agent, he utilizes digital communication and smartphone technology to slide into the protagonist's life, representing a contemporary version of the ancient tempter who exploits human vulnerability in the digital age.

I love the fact that I can get useful, condensed, information and ideas in a 8 - 15 minute podcast style audio. I'm not a general fan of podcasts because of all the fluff, but this cuts through all that.
