Navigating Psychosis, Co-parenting, and Loss of Romance in Relationships

Best quote from Navigating Psychosis, Co-parenting, and Loss of Romance in Relationships

    “

Romance often thrives on a little bit of the unknown, on surprises, on that spark of the unexpected. But after a psychotic episode, the 'unexpected' is terrifying, so the relationship over-corrects and becomes hyper-functional to avoid another breakdown.

    Input question

I have Psychosis, and my partner has had to deal with it. I'm now getting better but my partner said our relationship is more like a business. It hurt because I have been trying my hardest. We have a child and co parent but my partner and I are very different. I miss romance which I can't get with my partner. We split up and I found a girlfriend but when I spilt up with her, my partner said it hurt. So I said I wouldn't get with anyone else. I miss romance, and excitement.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Psychosis can fundamentally shift the dynamic of a relationship, often moving it from a romantic partnership to one that feels more functional or business-like. As one partner focuses on recovery, the emotional distance can lead to a significant loss of romance and excitement. Navigating these changes requires acknowledging the strain mental health challenges place on intimacy while trying to rebuild a connection that goes beyond just co-parenting or caretaking.

Co-parenting after experiencing psychosis involves balancing mental health recovery with the practical responsibilities of raising a child. When a relationship feels more like a business arrangement than a romantic bond, the focus often shifts entirely to the child's needs. This can create a stable environment for the child but may leave both parents feeling unfulfilled or lonely as they navigate their different personalities and the lingering impact of past health crises.

Relationship recovery after a mental health crisis like psychosis is a complex process that involves more than just medical stability. Even when one partner is getting better, the emotional scars may remain, leading to a lack of romantic excitement. Rebuilding romance often requires open communication about unmet needs and the pain of past breakups. It is a difficult journey where both partners must reconcile their differences and decide if they can move past a purely functional partnership.
