Explore the causes of tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis. Learn how repetitive stress affects the ECRB tendon and causes elbow pain beyond the court.

Tennis elbow isn’t necessarily an 'injury' in the way we usually think of a broken bone; it is often a degenerative process—a structural breakdown of the fibers in the tendon that connects your forearm muscles to your elbow.
An audio lesson covering the causes of tennis elbow, prevention strategies, and recovery techniques for those currently affected.

Tennis elbow, clinically known as lateral epicondylitis, is a common cause of elbow pain characterized by a sharp or aching sensation on the outside of the joint. It is primarily caused by a degenerative process in the extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) tendon. This occurs when repetitive stress leads to microscopic tears in the fibers that connect forearm muscles to the bone, often resulting from everyday activities rather than just sports.
No, you do not need to be an athlete to develop this condition. Despite its name, only about ten percent of people diagnosed with tennis elbow actually play the sport. The remaining ninety percent often develop the condition through mundane, repetitive motions found in daily life, such as using a computer mouse, turning doorknobs, gripping a pen tightly, or even lifting a coffee mug.
Symptoms of an injury to the ECRB tendon typically include a localized burning sensation or a deep ache on the outside of the elbow. This pain often radiates down the forearm toward the wrist. Many people experience these symptoms during simple tasks that involve gripping or forearm rotation. Because it is often a degenerative process rather than simple inflammation, the pain reflects the breakdown of tendon fibers over time.
