Разница заключается в исходном сырье и способе его обработки. Искусственные волокна производят из готовых природных полимеров, например, из древесной целлюлозы, меняя лишь физическую форму материала без изменения его химической сути. Синтетические же волокна создаются человеком «с нуля» из продуктов переработки нефти, газа или угля путем химического синтеза молекул, которых не существует в природе.
Вискозу часто ошибочно считают дешевой синтетикой из-за химического способа её производства, однако это искусственное волокно натурального происхождения. Её изготавливают из древесины лиственных или хвойных пород (например, ели или березы), которую измельчают и растворяют до состояния вязкой массы, а затем формируют из неё нити. Существуют и более современные виды вискозы, такие как тенсель, который производят из эвкалипта по экологически чистой технологии.
Шерсть состоит из белка кератина и имеет чешуйчатую структуру, которая позволяет ей «сваливаться», а наличие природного жира ланолина придает ей лечебные свойства и водоотталкивающий эффект. Шелк, состоящий из белка фиброина, является самым прочным натуральным волокном на разрыв и обладает уникальной способностью к терморегуляции, подстраиваясь под температуру тела человека.
Смешивание волокон позволяет объединить лучшие свойства разных материалов и снизить их недостатки. Например, добавление небольшого количества синтетики (полиэстера или полиамида) к хлопку или шерсти делает одежду более прочной, износостойкой и менее подверженной сминанию. Это позволяет создавать ткани, которые выглядят как натуральные, но при этом дешевле и практичнее в уходе.
Штапельное волокно — это короткие отрезки нитей длиной по пять-десять сантиметров, полученные путем нарезки огромного жгута из тысяч бесконечных волокон. Эта пушистая масса по своей структуре имитирует натуральный хлопок или шерсть. Из штапеля прядут обычную пряжу, что позволяет создавать ткани, которые на ощупь и вид напоминают натуральные, но обладают функциональными преимуществами химических волокон.
