When you look at Taiwan’s history, you aren’t just looking at the history of one island; you’re looking at the source point for half the world's maritime cultures. It is a place defined by layers of migration and collision, where every arrival brought a new struggle for control.
A comprehensive and detailed history of Taiwan, covering all major eras including indigenous origins and early trade, the colonial era and Japanese rule, and the transition from the post-war period to a modern democracy.

The name Ilha Formosa, meaning "Beautiful Island," was coined by Portuguese sailors in 1544. As they navigated the western Pacific, they were struck by the island's emerald-green peaks and recorded the phrase in their ship's log. This name persisted in the Western imagination for centuries, though the island's indigenous history had already been unfolding for thousands of years prior to their arrival.
The Taiwan Strait was created roughly 10,000 years ago at the end of the last Ice Age. As global temperatures rose, increasing sea levels submerged a land bridge that previously connected the island to the Asian continent. This geological event isolated the landmass, effectively turning Taiwan into a distinct cultural laboratory that allowed for the development of unique indigenous societies and traditions over the following millennia.
Taiwan is considered the heart of the Austronesian expansion, a major migration event that began around 3000 BC. The Dapenkeng culture emerged on the island during this time, introducing rice cultivation and corded-ware pottery. The descendants of these indigenous peoples eventually navigated away from Taiwan's shores, settling a vast geographic area stretching from Madagascar to Easter Island, marking a significant chapter in human maritime history.
The early inhabitants of Taiwan were the ancestors of today's indigenous peoples, specifically linked to the Dapenkeng culture that appeared abruptly about 5,000 years ago. These populations established a complex society long before any imperial explorers reached the island. Today, Taiwan is recognized both for this deep indigenous heritage and its modern identity as a global high-tech hub often referred to as the silicon shield.
