The 'light footprint' of the past has been replaced by a high-tempo, partner-led aerial campaign that is increasingly justified by a perceived direct threat to the American homeland.
Current military activities involving US Forces in counter-terrorism operations against Al-Shabaab in Somalia.

The recent surge in AFRICOM operations is driven by a fundamental reimagining of how the United States applies pressure to militant groups like al-Shabaab and ISIS in Somalia. Moving away from a light footprint, U.S. Africa Command has transitioned to a high-tempo, partner-led aerial campaign. This escalation is increasingly justified by a perceived direct threat to the American homeland, shifting the focus from regional stability in the Horn of Africa to preventing international attacks before they can originate from locations like the Golis Mountains.
U.S. Africa Command has significantly increased its pace of operations, breaking recent historical records. In the first three months of 2026 alone, AFRICOM conducted 49 airstrikes in Somalia. This follows a massive escalation in 2025, where the number of strikes jumped to 124 from just 10 the previous year. This trajectory suggests that current operations may rival or surpass previous records as the U.S. intensifies its counterterrorism efforts against extremist groups in the region.
The primary targets of the current high-intensity involvement in Somalia are al-Shabaab and the growing wing of ISIS in Somalia. The U.S. military is utilizing a high-tempo aerial campaign to apply pressure on these organizations within the Horn of Africa. By targeting these groups, particularly in rugged areas like the Golis Mountains, AFRICOM aims to disrupt their ability to plan and execute major international attacks, reflecting a shift in the narrative toward protecting the American homeland.
