Stanislav Petrov was a Soviet duty officer stationed in a secret bunker on September 26, 1983. During his shift, the most sophisticated warning technology of the time falsely indicated a nuclear launch from the United States. Despite the sirens and a flashing red launch screen, Petrov chose to trust his intuition over the computer system. By deciding to do nothing rather than alerting his superiors, he prevented a massive retaliatory strike and saved hundreds of millions of lives.
Just past midnight in September 1983, Soviet computer systems detected what appeared to be a Minuteman missile screaming toward the Soviet Union from America. The bunker's sirens began to howl, and the warning system displayed a giant red screen with the word LAUNCH. This high-pressure situation forced Stanislav Petrov to decide within minutes whether to follow his training and report a nuclear attack or treat the sophisticated detection as a false alarm.
Petrov prevented nuclear war by refusing to pick up the phone to alert his superiors of a detected missile launch. If he had followed his training, the Soviet Union would have likely launched a retaliatory strike, leading to the end of everything. Instead, he sat in the darkened bunker and chose not to trigger the chain of command, a single decision that changed the course of Cold War history and ensured human survival.

I love the fact that I can get useful, condensed, information and ideas in a 8 - 15 minute podcast style audio. I'm not a general fan of podcasts because of all the fluff, but this cuts through all that.
