Explore how to identify and rewrite self-limiting beliefs. Learn the psychology of inner scripts and how to overcome maladaptive thoughts to reach your potential.

Self-limiting beliefs are like having a high-performance engine but keeping the emergency brake pulled halfway up at all times. They feel like the literal laws of physics in our lives, but they are actually just scripts we've been handed that we can choose to rewrite.
Limiting beliefs

In psychology, self-limiting beliefs are assumptions or perceptions you hold about yourself and the world that hold you back from activities you are capable of performing. These beliefs often feel like absolute truths or laws of physics, but they are actually scripts that act like an emergency brake on your potential. They often manifest as internal dialogue telling you that you are unqualified or unable to start something new.
Inner scripts are often considered maladaptive because they are negatively biased, inaccurate, and surprisingly rigid. Instead of helping you grow, these beliefs become central to your identity and stifle your progress. For example, rather than viewing a single mistake as a temporary setback, a maladaptive script might lead you to believe that failure is a permanent part of who you are as a person.
Self-limiting beliefs impact personal growth by causing individuals to talk themselves out of opportunities before they even try. Whether it is avoiding a new career path or passing up a challenge because of self-doubt, these scripts serve as a form of self-protection that ultimately limits potential. By treating these perceptions as facts, people often stay within their comfort zones and prevent themselves from achieving what they are truly capable of doing.
