If there is no permanent self, who actually reincarnates? Explore how karma flows like a river to reach enlightenment without a fixed ego.

What moves forward is not a metaphysical passenger, but a causal momentum—a 'karmic stream' of habits, tendencies, and predispositions. You inherit the consequences of your previous actions not because you are the same person, but because you are the same flow.
I want to tackle the Buddhist concept of non-self and instead the self is a flowing river and I want to understand in some schools how that concept is reconciled with the idea of reincarnation or enlightenment. What part of that non-existent self reincarnates or is enlightened?

Reincarnation is explained not as a solid soul moving from one body to another, but as a "karmic stream" or a transmission of energy. The script uses the analogy of one candle lighting another: the second flame is caused by the first and continues the pattern, yet no physical object has traveled between them. Identity is viewed as a persistent flow of habits, memories, and tendencies rather than a static "me-thing" or passenger.
The Storehouse Consciousness, or Alaya-vijnana, acts as a deep repository for "karmic seeds" or informational imprints. While the surface-level senses and the ego-function dissolve at death, this deeper layer carries the momentum of a person's past actions and predispositions forward. It is not a permanent soul because it is constantly changing as new seeds are added and old ones mature, functioning more like a dynamic database of causal patterns than a fixed entity.
The script suggests shifting from "self-improvement," which often reinforces ego-attachment, to "stream-training." This involves using mindfulness to observe thoughts and impulses as "seeds" maturing in the stream rather than defining characteristics of a fixed identity. By recognizing that habits are just "gorges" carved into the mind by past repetition, an individual can consciously choose to carve new paths through intentional actions and aspirations.
Enlightenment is described as the moment the information pattern of the self recognizes its own "emptiness" or fluid nature. It is compared to a wave realizing it is made of water; the wave does not disappear, but its fear of crashing vanishes because it understands it is part of the larger ocean. It is a shift in perspective where the "stream" of consciousness no longer tries to own the water or find a permanent resting place, but instead flows with wisdom and without attachment.
