Explore the difference between reacting to insults and setting boundaries in toxic family dynamics. Learn to protect your emotional health and your children.

A boundary isn't a punishment or a dramatic ultimatum; it’s actually about clarity and deciding what you will and won't tolerate to protect your emotional health.
So, my sister’s boyfriend passed by me and said things to my kids and to me. I was going to ignore it, but then he called me a “rat.” I got my phone out and started recording him. I told him, “Don’t talk to my kids when you pass by here. I don’t say hi to you, so you don’t need to say hi to me. Do you understand? Are we clear?” He said, “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” but he saw that I was recording him. Was that a good response, or did he get a reaction out of me?

When faced with a pointed insult like 'rat' from family or family-adjacent individuals, it is common for your protective instincts to redline. Instead of focusing on controlling the other person, focus on your own response and emotional health. Setting a boundary is not about punishment or drama; it is about providing clarity on what you will and will not tolerate in your personal space.
A reaction is often an immediate, high-stress spike in heart rate that may give a toxic person the drama they thrive on. In contrast, boundary setting is a commitment to your own limits and a sign of high self-awareness. While you cannot control the behavior of others, you can control your response by deciding what is necessary to protect your emotional well-being and your children.
Parents often feel like they are on a battlefield when insults are hurled in front of their children. Protecting the space around your children involves moving away from reactive anger and toward firm boundary setting. By questioning your responses and seeking clarity, you demonstrate self-awareness and prioritize a healthy environment over the chaotic dynamics that toxic individuals often attempt to create.
