Discover how regulated utilities make money through infrastructure investment rather than electricity sales. Learn about the unique utility business model today.

In most of the U.S., utilities are regulated monopolies where profit is almost entirely tied to how much infrastructure they build—the poles, the wires, and the substations—not how much power you actually consume.
How utilities make money, specifically, electric utilities, both regulated and deregulated

Unlike traditional businesses that profit from selling more products, regulated utilities operate on a counterintuitive business model. They do not make a profit on the electricity they sell to consumers; instead, those costs are passed through dollar-for-dollar. Their earnings are almost entirely tied to capital-intensive infrastructure investment. This means their profit grows based on the construction of physical assets like poles, wires, and substations rather than the volume of power consumed by their customer base.
Utilities are often classified as regulated monopolies because they are granted a guaranteed customer base in a specific area, as individuals cannot easily start their own power grids. Because consumers cannot choose another provider, the government regulates these companies and dictates exactly how much they are allowed to earn. This trade-off ensures essential services are maintained while preventing the utility from setting arbitrary prices, though it shifts the focus of their profitability toward long-term infrastructure projects.
Surprisingly, if your electric bill doubles because you used more power, the utility company isn't necessarily earning more profit. Since the cost of the electricity itself is passed through to the consumer without a markup, the utility's earnings remain tied to their capital investments in the power grid. While your bill reflects the energy used, the company's actual financial growth is driven by the infrastructure they build and maintain to deliver that energy to your home.
