Para él, la imaginación es el único espacio de desarrollo real; sostiene que no es necesario viajar a China si se tiene la capacidad de ver el universo entero en una gota de lluvia. Es una forma de resistencia pasiva contra la mediocridad de la vida diaria, donde se renuncia a la voluntad para preservar la pureza del pensamiento.

    Lisboa no es solo el escenario de la obra, sino una extensión del cuerpo y el alma de Bernardo Soares. La narrativa se limita casi exclusivamente a unas pocas calles, especialmente la Rúa dos Douradores donde se encuentra su oficina, convirtiendo este espacio geográfico en una "celda infinita". Existe una fusión entre la identidad del que escribe y la ciudad; la Lisboa de Pessoa se transforma en una "Lisboa-sueño" donde lo cotidiano y lo gris de la rutina de un contable se convierten en el combustible para una explosión de filosofía y metafísica.

    La obra presenta una tensión constante donde el pensamiento es visto como una "enfermedad de la sensibilidad" que termina matando la pureza del sentimiento.
