General history of Moses Lake, Washington, covering Indigenous roots, the impact of irrigation, and its modern development.

Before it was known as Moses Lake, the Indigenous Sinkiuse people called the area Houaph, which literally translates to "willow." This name reflected a soft, green landscape that provided a rich environment for Mid-Columbia tribes. While early European settlers often described the surrounding high desert as a barren wasteland of sagebrush, the Sinkiuse saw a vibrant area teeming with life and essential resources.
For the Sinkiuse and other Mid-Columbia tribes, the land around Moses Lake served as a massive pantry rather than a desert. They spent centuries camping along the serpentine shores to gather waterfowl eggs and harvest camas roots. This perspective of the lake as a rich, shallow source of life contrasts sharply with the views of later settlers who arrived in the 1880s seeking to reshape the land for agricultural productivity.
Moses Lake has undergone a dramatic transformation from a small town of only 302 people in 1938 to a significant player in the global electric vehicle industry. Today, the region is recognized as a center for high-tech battery manufacturing. This shift represents a literal reshaping of the earth, moving from a recreation and agricultural hub to a vital component of the modern high-tech economy in Washington State.
