Explore the origins of the Mikoyan MiG-29 Fulcrum, the Soviet Union's response to the F-15 Eagle, designed for air superiority and extreme agility during the Cold War.

The MiG-29 was a purpose-built tool designed for a very specific, very brutal type of warfare, prioritizing ruggedness and extreme agility over the jack-of-all-trades philosophy of the West.
A comprehensive lesson on the Mikoyan MiG-29 Fulcrum, covering its design philosophy, technical specifications, combat history, performance compared to Western counterparts, and its continued role in modern conflicts.

The development of the MiG-29 was triggered by Soviet intelligence regarding the American FX program, which produced the F-15 Eagle. Realizing their existing fleet of interceptors like the Su-15 was becoming obsolete, Soviet planners initiated the Prospective Frontal Fighter (PFI) program. They needed an 'anti-F-15' capable of matching Western next-generation heavyweights to maintain air superiority during the high-stakes environment of the late 1960s and 1970s.
The PFI, or Prospective Frontal Fighter program, was a Soviet military requirement issued to replace aging aircraft like the Yak-28. The goals were incredibly ambitious, demanding extreme agility, a massive combat radius, and the unique ability to operate from rough, third-class airfields with short runways. Because these requirements were so demanding, the project was eventually split into two categories, mirroring the American strategy of having both heavy and light fighters.
The MiG-29, known by the NATO reporting name 'Fulcrum,' was born from the Lightweight PFI (LPFI) requirement under the guidance of Artem Mikoyan. This development mirrored the U.S. approach where the heavy F-15 Eagle was complemented by the lighter F-16. While the F-15 represented the heavyweight threat the Soviets aimed to counter, the MiG-29 was designed as the agile, lightweight counterpart capable of performing like a world-class gymnast even on gravel roads.
