The very foundation of Lake Superior is this deep, heavy bowl of ancient fire, created when the ground beneath your feet was literally tearing itself apart in a massive rift that almost split the North American continent in two.
Explain the history of Lake Superior

The Midcontinent Rift is a massive prehistoric rift that formed over a billion years ago, specifically between 1109 and 1094 Ma. During this period, the North American continent began to tear itself apart, stretching and thinning the earth's crust for approximately fifteen million years. This geological event nearly split the continent in two, leaving behind a deep central depression that eventually shaped the foundation of Lake Superior.
The region experienced some of the most voluminous volcanism in history as the crust pulled apart. This process created subaerial basalts, which are massive lava flows that accumulated in the central basin. These volcanic rocks reached an incredible thickness of up to 25 kilometers, or about fifteen miles. This immense stack of solid volcanic rock serves as a prehistoric record of the violent geological forces that once dominated the landscape.
The volcanic activity and rifting occurred long before the era of the dinosaurs, dating back more than a billion years. The most intense period of this geological history took place over a fifteen-million-year span. During this time, the earth was under incredible tension as it attempted to unzip itself, resulting in the vast accumulation of lava flows and the formation of the giant scar that we now recognize as part of the Lake Superior basin.
