If you’ve ever felt a bit worried that your new kitten is sleeping their life away, you’re actually just witnessing them doing the most important work of their lives. In those first few months, they’re basically sleeping 18 to 22 hours a day.
Why do young cats/kittens sleep so hard and so much?

Kittens are known to sleep between 18 to 22 hours a day, which accounts for nearly 90 percent of their time during the newborn stage. While it may seem like they are sleeping their lives away, this extensive rest is a vital part of their development. These long periods of sleep are interrupted only by short, concentrated bursts of learning, eating, and the high-energy activity often referred to as zoomies.
The biological construction zone refers to the massive internal development happening while a kitten is asleep. Even when they appear to be a fuzzy puddle on the sofa, their bodies are performing the most important work of their lives. This growth process is why kittens require significantly more rest than adult cats, as their physical and neurological systems are being built and refined during these deep sleep cycles.
Yes, it is quite common for kittens to sleep so deeply that their eyes remain slightly cracked open. Owners might notice their kitten doesn't flinch even when nudged during these periods of intense rest. This deep sleep is a natural part of their feline development and is necessary to support the rapid growth cycles they experience during their first few months of life.
Kittens operate on a cycle of total blackouts and high-speed zoomies. Because they spend the majority of their time in a biological construction zone of sleep, their awake windows are limited to concentrated bursts of energy. During these two to four hours of daily activity, they focus on eating, causing chaos, and experiencing the world to facilitate their learning and development.
