Isle D'yeu is a masterclass in how to live on the edge of the world. It’s a place that has been shaped by the sea, but it’s never been conquered by it.
I'm currently staying on Isle D'yeu, having sailed there from mainland France. Consider the island's history including seaweed harvesting and the medical castle

L’Île d’Yeu, historically known as Oya, is a geological chameleon with layers of history dating back to the Neolithic era. The landscape is marked by ancient dolmens and menhirs, suggesting the island served as a sacred site long before written records existed. Its connection to mainland France has shifted over millennia, sometimes linked by the rocks of the Pont d’Yeu depending on ocean levels, making it a unique site of survival on the wild Atlantic coast.
The island's early history is defined by prehistoric populations who left behind massive granite markers like dolmens. Later, by the end of the 6th century, the island saw a significant cultural shift when Irish monks from Bangor, who were disciples of Saint Columban, arrived. These monks established a monastery dedicated to Saint Hilaire and played a crucial role in the island's development by helping residents clear forests and establish farming practices.
Arriving at Port-Joinville feels like stepping through a time machine into a world shaped by the Atlantic. Visitors can explore a landscape vibrating with history, from the modern docks to the ancient Neolithic stones scattered across the island. The area showcases the transition from a prehistoric sacred site to a monastic settlement, all set against the backdrop of a granite outcrop that has survived thousands of years of changing sea levels and isolation from the continent.
