How to take care of a cat
Cow's milk is not a suitable substitute for mother's milk or specialized kitten milk replacement (KMR) because it can severely upset a kitten's tiny stomach. Furthermore, most adult cats are actually lactose intolerant. Providing them with a bowl of cow's milk typically leads to gastrointestinal distress, resulting in an upset stomach and diarrhea.
Whisker fatigue occurs because a cat's whiskers are incredibly sensitive; if they constantly touch the sides of a deep or narrow bowl while eating or drinking, it can cause physical discomfort. To prevent this, owners should use wide, shallow bowls made of ceramic or stainless steel. For hydration, using a water fountain is even more effective as cats are instinctively drawn to running water, which can increase their intake by up to 50%.
The Golden Window is the critical period between four and eight weeks of age when kittens are most receptive to new social cues. During this time, it is essential to introduce them to a variety of people—such as children, men with deep voices, and the elderly—to ensure they grow into adaptable, confident adults. This is also the ideal time for "Touch Tolerance Development," where owners gently handle a kitten's paws, ears, and mouth to prepare them for future veterinary exams and grooming.
You can assess your cat's health using the "Body Condition Score," a scale from 1 to 9 where 4 or 5 is considered ideal. A healthy cat should have a visible waist when viewed from above, and you should be able to feel their ribs under a thin layer of fat. If a cat looks like a "fuzzy loaf of bread" with no visible curves, they are likely overweight, which increases the risk of serious issues like diabetes and arthritis.
Cats are apex predators hardwired to hunt and climb; without outlets for these instincts, they often develop behavioral problems like scratching furniture. Providing vertical space, such as a cat tree at least 150 centimeters tall, allows them to survey their environment safely. Interactive play should mimic a hunt—starting with a slow "scurry" and ending with the cat successfully "catching" the toy—to provide a sense of completion and prevent the frustration often caused by toys they cannot physically grasp, like laser pointers.
