Ein Ping nutzt das ICMP-Protokoll auf Schicht 3 des Netzwerk-Stacks und prüft lediglich, ob eine IP-Adresse grundsätzlich erreichbar ist. Da Ping keine Ports verwendet, sagt er nichts darüber aus, ob Dienste auf Port 443 oder anderen Anwendungsschichten antworten. Wie Lena und Eli im Podcast besprechen, ist die Erreichbarkeit auf Vermittlungsebene nicht mit der Erlaubnis oder Fähigkeit zur Anwendungskommunikation gleichzusetzen.
Routing bedeutet lediglich, dass ein Paket den Weg zum Zielgebäude findet, aber es bedeutet nicht, dass die Tür zum spezifischen Apartment offen steht. In der IT-Administration ist geroutet nicht gleich erlaubt, da Firewalls oder Sicherheitsgruppen den Zugriff auf Ports blockieren können, selbst wenn die Schicht 3 erreichbar ist. Ein erfolgreiches ICMP-Paket bestätigt nur die Existenz der Adresse, nicht die Verfügbarkeit der Anwendungslogik.
In modernen Cloud-Umgebungen wie AWS oder Azure ist es völlig normal, dass ICMP standardmäßig blockiert wird, um die Sichtbarkeit für Netzwerkscans zu verringern. Dies dient der Sicherheit, führt aber oft zu Verwirrung in der IT-Administration, wenn ein Server nicht auf Ping reagiert, obwohl die Anwendung korrekt läuft. Ein fehlendes Ping-Signal bedeutet in diesen Umgebungen also nicht zwangsläufig, dass der Host offline ist.
Nein, die Aussage „einen Port pingen“ ist laut Jackson und Miles ein technischer Kategorienfehler. Da Ping auf der Vermittlungsschicht (Schicht 3) existiert, kennt es das Konzept von Ports noch gar nicht, da diese erst auf höheren Schichten des Stacks definiert werden. Wer versucht, einen Port zu pingen, vermischt die reine Erreichbarkeit der Hardware-Adresse mit der spezifischen Kommunikation einer Anwendung oder eines Dienstes.

I love the fact that I can get useful, condensed, information and ideas in a 8 - 15 minute podcast style audio. I'm not a general fan of podcasts because of all the fluff, but this cuts through all that.

I am finishing up my doctorate, and have to read a lot of unfamiliar material... With BeFreed, you simply enter a prompt, and the app finds source material for you and generates an audio podcast. I find the process in BeFreed to be more streamlined than NotebookLM.
