Best quote from Firelines: The Art of Hand Crew Combat and Wildland Firefighting

    “

Even with all our technology—airplanes, satellites, infrared cameras—the final line of defense is still a group of 20 people with hand tools. By stripping fuel away to mineral soil, we are using the most direct and effective method possible to stop a fire.

    Frequently Asked Questions

A fireline is a critical strip of ground that has been stripped entirely of all flammable material, right down to the mineral soil. Similar to a hiking trail, its primary purpose is to create a gap that a wildfire simply cannot jump. By removing everything that can burn, hand crews create a perimeter that stops the fire's progress, which is a fundamental strategy in fire containment.

While airtankers are vital for cooling flames with red retardant, they do not actually put the fire out; they only slow it down. To truly contain a wildfire, hand crews of 18 to 20 firefighters must hike into areas that bulldozers and vehicles cannot reach. These crews perform the manual labor required to carve out a perimeter on the dirt, making them the backbone of wildland firefighting.

The construction of a fireline involves high-level strategy and specific physical dimensions to be effective against a wildfire. A general rule used by these crews is to clear a path that is twice as wide as the nearby brush is tall. This human-led effort ensures that the elemental force of the fire is met with a sufficient gap of mineral soil, preventing the flames from spreading further.
