Explore why European capital fuels the American tech boom. Compare S&P 500 and STOXX Europe 600 returns and learn why EU savings struggle to fund local innovation.

The very people saving for retirement in Berlin or Lyon are effectively subsidizing the digital dominance of Silicon Valley, leaving their own local innovators starved for the scale they need to compete.
The long-term societal returns of corporate investment, specifically comparing the impact of European capital flowing into U.S. equities versus staying in European equities. Focus on popular concepts like ESG, impact investing, and the wider social consequences of capital flight from Europe.

Over the last decade, the performance gap between these two indices has been significant. A dollar invested in the S&P 500 ten years ago would have yielded a total return of approximately 300% today. In contrast, the same investment in the STOXX Europe 600 would have returned only about 150%. This divergence highlights a massive structural shift in global markets and where wealth is choosing to grow.
While the euro area maintains a massive savings surplus, reaching 276 billion euros in 2025, this capital often fails to find a home in European equities. European households tend to save at higher rates than Americans but frequently park their money in low-yield bank deposits. Ironically, much of this capital ends up funding American tech giants that outcompete local firms, as European investors seek growth opportunities outside their own continent.
The tendency for European capital to be 'foreign-biased' regarding growth assets creates a profound tension for the continent's future. By failing to invest in its own innovation, Europe struggles to fund the firms that could drive its economic social fabric. This episode examines the societal price of these investment choices and what it means for a continent that is increasingly unable to support its own technological advancement and innovation funding.
