In their narrative, your reaction justifies their claim that you are the "unstable" or "difficult" one, which allows them to avoid looking at their own internal dysfunctions or lack of independence.
Projective identification is a process where a family deposits its collective toxic shame, unresolved trauma, or insecurities onto one person, often the most sensitive or honest member. The family then treats that person as if they actually embody those negative traits. Over time, the scapegoat may begin to act out due to the constant pressure and gaslighting, which the family then points to as "proof" that the scapegoat was the problem all along.
