What is the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) and how does it apply to ministry?

The Entrepreneurial Operating System, or EOS, is a framework originally designed for businesses to bring order to organizational chaos. In a campus ministry context, it serves as a "trellis for the vine," providing a structured container that allows spiritual work to grow more effectively. It consists of six key components—Vision, People, Data, Issues, Process, and Traction—which help a ministry team move from being merely "busy" to actually gaining momentum in their mission.

What does it mean to have the "Right People in the Right Seats"?

This concept emphasizes that having the wrong person in a role is detrimental to both the individual and the mission. In EOS, "Right People" are those who share the organization’s core values and DNA. "Right Seats" refers to an Accountability Chart based on function rather than just titles. To determine if someone is in the right seat, leaders use the GWC filter: do they "Get it" (understand the role), "Want it" (have genuine passion), and have the "Capacity" (time and skills) to do it?

How can a ministry use data without "mechanizing" the Holy Spirit?

Using data is not about replacing spiritual leadership but about having a "pulse" on the ministry’s health. EOS suggests using a weekly Scorecard with 5 to 15 leading indicators—activity-based numbers like "new student contacts" or "gospel appointments set"—rather than just lagging indicators like total attendance. This creates a lucid, transparent organization where progress is measured objectively, smoking out reality and removing reliance on "gut feels" or vague spiritual platitudes.

What is the "IDS" method for solving problems?

IDS stands for Identify, Discuss, and Solve. Most teams waste time discussing symptoms without ever finding the root cause of a problem. The IDS process forces a team to stay in the "Identify" phase until the real issue is unearthed. Once identified, the team discusses the data points and concludes with a specific "Solve"—a concrete action item with an owner and a deadline—ensuring the issue is knocked down and goes away forever.

What are "Rocks" and how do they create traction?

Rocks are the 3 to 7 most important priorities for a ministry team to accomplish within a 90-day window. Based on the analogy that big rocks must be placed in a jar before the sand (daily busy-work) to fit everything in, these goals ensure the team focuses on what actually moves the needle. By reviewing these Rocks weekly in a "Level 10 Meeting," staff members remain accountable and ensure their daily actions align with the long-term vision.
