Explore Eastern Orthodoxy and the paradox of knowing an ineffable God. Learn how John of Damascus and the Church Fathers bridge the gap to the divine essence.

Knowing God isn't about solving a math problem; it’s about entering a mystery that is both completely hidden and yet, through Christ, incredibly close.

In Eastern Orthodoxy, the term ineffable refers to the belief that God is ultimately incomprehensible and beyond human mental bandwidth. As John of Damascus noted, no one has seen God at any time, making Him a being that humans cannot fully wrap their heads around or describe. This creates a divine paradox where God is both completely beyond us and yet the central focus of a deep, personal relationship.
According to John of Damascus and Orthodox theology, the knowledge of God’s existence is implanted in all people by nature. This internal compass acts like hardware for a signal, pointing toward the divine even when the divine essence remains incomprehensible. While we cannot know what God is in His essence, He reveals what He wants us to know through the Law, the Prophets, and the person of Christ.
Orthodox theology, supported by the Church Fathers, distinguishes between the divine essence—the actual 'stuff' of the Divine—and what has been revealed to humanity. While the essence of God remains hidden and ineffable, God provides boundaries for our understanding by revealing Himself through specific channels. This revelation ensures that while God is an infinite horizon, believers are not left in total darkness regarding His nature and will.
