How far can a liberator fall before he becomes the villain? The 'Dark Age' is claiming the old guard, but it’s forging something new in the survivors.

    Input question

I've been listening to the red rising book series by Pierce brown. I want to start the newest book in the series, light bringer, but I don't remember what happened in the last book, which I think was titled dark age, beyond that Darrow was fighting in mercury. Frequently Asked Questions

The Storm Gods were ancient, massive terraforming machines on Mercury designed to control the weather. During the Battle of Ladon, Darrow harnessed these machines to crush and drown his enemies in a desperate attempt to survive. While the tactic was effective, it resulted in the deaths of millions of people, leading to a central moral question in the script: how far can a liberator go before he becomes the villain?

The Abomination is a ten-year-old clone of Adrius au Augustus, also known as the Jackal from the original trilogy. He is described as being just as brilliant and twice as sadistic as the original. He successfully orchestrated the "Day of Red Doves," a political massacre on Luna that decapitated the Republic's leadership, and he currently holds high-profile prisoners like Sevro, threatening them with a memory-altering device called the Pandemonium Chair.

The Obsidian ranks suffered a massive fracture due to the arrival of Volsung Fá, a terrifying figure claiming to be the father of Ragnar and Sefi. Fá brutally murdered and "consumed" Sefi, the current leader who wanted to build a peaceful culture for her people. By killing her, Fá destroyed Sefi's dream and reverted many Obsidians back to their old, violent ways as shock troops, significantly shifting the balance of power away from the Republic.

Darrow is in a position of extreme vulnerability, having escaped Mercury as an outlaw with no army and no official support from the Republic's Senate. In contrast, Lysander au Lune has emerged as a rising conqueror and a hero to the Society. Lysander has gained significant momentum by winning the battle on Mercury, securing Darrow’s signature weapon—the slingBlade—and positioning himself as a "Shepherd" who will restore order through Gold hierarchy.

At the end of the script's recap, Sevro, Clown, and Pebble are being held captive by the Abomination on Luna, facing the threat of psychological breaking. Additionally, Virginia (Mustang) has been forced to flee her capital after the political collapse. On a more hopeful note, Cassius au Bellona has returned to the fold, having rescued Darrow at the end of the Mercury campaign, and is currently with Lyria of Lagalos.
