The expansion of the universe means that galaxies are moving away from each other over time. This was discovered by Edwin Hubble, who observed a "redshift" in the light from distant galaxies, indicating that the farther away a galaxy is, the faster it is receding. This discovery implies that the universe is not static or eternal, and if we trace this expansion backward, it suggests the universe began at a single, infinitely dense point known as a singularity.
In General Relativity, gravity is not a mysterious pulling force between objects but rather a warping of the fabric of space-time. Imagine placing a heavy bowling ball on a trampoline; it creates a dip that causes a smaller marble to roll toward it. Similarly, massive objects like stars and planets warp the space-time around them, and this curvature dictates how other objects and even light move through the universe.
The Uncertainty Principle, introduced by Werner Heisenberg, states that it is impossible to know both the exact position and the exact velocity of a particle at the same time. This concept destroyed the idea of "determinism," which suggested that the future could be perfectly predicted if we knew the state of every particle. Instead, it revealed that at a fundamental level, the universe is governed by randomness and probability rather than absolute certainties.
Our experience of time moving forward, known as the "arrow of time," is tied to the concept of entropy, which is the natural tendency for disorder to increase over time. For example, a broken cup does not spontaneously reassemble because that would require a decrease in disorder. We exist in an expanding phase of the universe where disorder is increasing, which creates the thermodynamic conditions necessary for intelligent life to consume energy and perceive the passage of time.
A black hole is an object so incredibly dense that its gravitational pull prevents anything, including light, from escaping once it passes a certain point. They are formed when massive stars run out of fuel and collapse under their own weight. However, Stephen Hawking discovered that black holes are not completely black; due to quantum effects, they emit "Hawking radiation," which causes them to slowly lose mass and eventually evaporate over vast periods of time.
