Learn how to break the pattern of codependency and overcome other-focus. Discover how to reclaim your identity and stop managing everyone else's emotional state.

Codependency is not a character flaw; it is a nervous system in survival mode where you mistake someone else's calm for your own safety. Recovery is the process of moving from 'fusion,' where two people collapse into one unit, to 'interdependence,' where you are two whole people choosing to share a life.
I would like to develop a higher sense of self-worth and learning who I am and being more independent and not so codependent on my partners or friends

Other-focus is a reflex where your internal emotional state depends entirely on someone else's mood. Instead of acknowledging your own needs, you become a detective of your partner's feelings, scanning for tension or shifts in their behavior. This pattern often means you only feel permission to breathe when the other person is happy, effectively making your own identity a footnote in their story.
Signs of codependency often include waking up and immediately scanning your partner's emotional state before your own. You might feel exhausted from constantly managing everyone else's moods while your own world feels like it is falling apart. If you prioritize holding everyone else's world together while forgetting to fill your own cup, you are likely stuck in a cycle of codependency and other-focus.
Breaking these patterns is essential because chronic other-focus leads to emotional exhaustion and a loss of self-identity. When you are constantly bracing for someone else's storm, you neglect your own emotional regulation and mental well-being. By shifting the focus back to yourself, you can stop the cycle of feeling like your own weather report depends on someone else's sky and begin to prioritize your own needs.
