Mary died because she focused on the complexity of her symbols rather than the security of her delivery. She trusted in her cipher, and her cipher betrayed her.
The Babington Plot with a focus on the secret ciphered letters used in the conspiracy against Elizabeth I.

The Babington Plot was a 1586 conspiracy aimed at placing Mary, Queen of Scots, on the English throne. It failed because Sir Francis Walsingham, head of an early modern intelligence service, intercepted the conspirators' communications. Although Mary used complex encryption and letter-locking techniques, Walsingham’s team successfully monitored the channel of communication, which involved secret messages hidden in beer barrels, eventually securing the evidence needed for her royal execution.
Mary Stuart relied on a nomenclator cipher, a sophisticated hybrid of symbols and secret code words she believed was unbreakable. However, Thomas Phelippes, a brilliant cryptanalyst working for Sir Francis Walsingham, managed to break the code in just a few days. This breakthrough allowed the English intelligence service to read her private correspondence and gather documented proof of her involvement in the plot against the crown.
The primary figures involved in dismantling the plot's security were Sir Francis Walsingham and Thomas Phelippes. Walsingham is credited with building Europe's first modern intelligence service to protect the Elizabethan state. Phelippes served as the expert cryptanalyst who deciphered the secret letters. On the opposing side was Mary, Queen of Scots, who utilized her training in French diplomacy and spiral letter-locking to attempt to secure her dangerous correspondence.
