Explore the AMX-30 DFC, France's stealth ghost tank prototype. Learn how the Démonstrateur Furtif Chenillé used technology to vanish from radar and thermal sensors.

The DFC was a pioneer in realizing that the 'battle of the signatures' was just as important as the 'battle of the armor,' proving that a tank’s best defense might not be how much steel it has, but how little information it gives to the enemy.
Comprehensive technical and historical breakdown of the AMX-30 DFC (Démonstrateur Furtif Chenillé) stealth tank prototype, including its infrared masking technology, its origins in the 1990 project, and how it differs from the standard AMX-30 main battle tank.

The AMX-30 DFC, also known as the Démonstrateur Furtif Chenillé, was a French prototype designed to test stealth technology on the battlefield. Developed by the French Defense Procurement Agency (DGA) around 1990, it was a modified AMX-30 B2 tank. This 'Tracked Stealthy Demonstrator' served as a case study for making heavy armored vehicles nearly invisible to modern detection methods like radar and thermal imaging.
The AMX-30 DFC was engineered to fundamentally rewrite the rules of vehicle visibility by focusing on thermal signature reduction and radar evasion. Instead of appearing as a bright heat signature on a thermal imager, the tank was designed to look like a cold rock or a faint, blurry smudge. This allowed the thirty-ton war machine to effectively vanish from high-end sensors, earning it the nickname of a 'ghost tank' within French armored divisions.
The project was spearheaded by the DGA, which is the French Defense Procurement Agency. They initiated the AMX-30 DFC project at a significant turning point in military history to explore how stealth technology, typically associated with aircraft like the F-117 Nighthawk, could be applied to ground combat. By using the existing AMX-30 B2 chassis, the DGA created a functional demonstrator to test the limits of military stealth technology.
