Explore Adi Kailash, the sacred peak of Uttarakhand. Learn about the Panch Kailash, Gauri Kund, and the spiritual significance of this 5,975-meter mountain.

The physical geography of this region is inextricably linked to its spiritual identity, where the sedimentary floor of an ancient sea was buckled and lifted to form the Himalayas, leaving seashells on the roof of the world.

Adi Kailash, also known as Chota Kailash or Shiva Kailash, is a sacred mountain peak located in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, India. It is situated in the easternmost mountain wedge of the region, positioned between the borders of Tibet and Nepal. Standing at an elevation of 5,975 meters, it is considered a geographical anchor for spiritual beliefs and is often referred to as the "little brother" to Mount Kailash in Tibet.
Adi Kailash holds a prominent place in the sacred hierarchy of the Panch Kailash, or the Five Kailashas. It is considered the second most important peak among these five spiritual sites. For travelers and pilgrims, visiting this peak offers an immersion into a profound system of spiritual belief, marking it as a vital destination for those exploring the religious landscape of the Uttarakhand mountains.
The base of the pyramidal Adi Kailash peak is home to two stunning glacial lakes known as Gauri Kund and Parvati Tal. These lakes are famous for reflecting the massive, snow-covered face of the mountain, creating a visual experience often compared to a natural cathedral of ice and stone. These landmarks add to the mysterious and serene atmosphere that defines the seven-day trek through the Pithoragarh district.
Adi Kailash stands at an official height of 5,975 meters. For many years, the elevation was thought to be 6,191 meters; however, this measurement was corrected in 2004. A British climbing team reached the summit that year and provided the accurate measurement of 5,975 meters, resolving the long-standing mystery regarding the actual height of this significant peak in the Uttarakhand region.
