    Eli: Fíjate que eso que dices es justo la esencia de la etnografía. No es ir a mirar de lejos con una libreta, es "meter los pies en el barro", como dicen por ahí. Es un método donde te conviertes en un observador participante. O sea, tienes que estar presente, convivir, cocinar con ellos o hasta jugar al fútbol para que te dejen entrar en su mundo.

    Nia: Pero eso tiene que ser durísimo, ¿no? Porque una cosa es ser un científico en una oficina y otra muy distinta es lo que hizo Philippe Bourgois. El tipo se instaló en el East Harlem en 1985, que en ese entonces era de lo más pobre de Manhattan, y se pasó cuatro años conviviendo con vendedores de crack.

    Eli: ¡No me digas! Cuatro años es una vida. Y fíjate que lo curioso es que él ni siquiera iba por el crack, iba por la "economía paralela", pero el barrio lo absorbió. Al final, para entender esa realidad, tienes que ganarte una confianza que no se compra con encuestas. Pero claro, ahí es donde aparecen unos dilemas éticos que te dejan frío. Para entender cómo funciona todo esto, hay que empezar por ver cómo estos investigadores se jugaron el tipo.
