Para Karl Marx, la desigualdad es el motor del sistema capitalista y surge del conflicto inevitable entre quienes poseen los medios de producción y quienes solo tienen su fuerza de trabajo. En cambio, Émile Durkheim ve la sociedad como un organismo vivo donde la desigualdad es un síntoma de "anomia" o falta de regulación.
