Unable to bear life under Union victory, he ended his life on June 18, 1865, after writing in his diary: "I here declare my unmitigated hatred to Yankee rule-to all political, social and business connections with Yankees, and the perfidious, malignant and vile Yankee race."

The Moral Reckoning: Slavery's Central Role in the Conflict
Throughout the Fort Sumter crisis, the institution of slavery remained the central, inescapable issue driving the conflict. Despite later attempts to reframe the Civil War as primarily about states' rights, the words and actions of secession's architects made their motivations unmistakable.
Mississippi's secession declaration stated plainly: "Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-the greatest material interest of the world." Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephens declared slavery the "cornerstone" of the new government, explicitly rejecting the Declaration of Independence's assertion that all men are created equal.
Even as the secession crisis unfolded, the slave trade continued unabated. In January 1860, Richmond trader Hector Davis noted that "good young men are as high or higher than I ever saw them." Charleston's Ryan's Mart conducted at least eight slave auctions that month alone, selling 658 enslaved people including infants and children-among them a three-year-old boy named Little Joe.
Mary Chesnut, despite supporting secession, recorded her moral revulsion at a slave auction she witnessed: "South Carolina slave holder as I am my very soul sickened." She particularly condemned the sexual exploitation of enslaved women, writing famously: "Like the patriarchs of old, our men live all in one house with their wives and their concubines; and the mulattoes one sees in every family partly resemble the white children. Any lady is ready to tell you who is the father of all the mulatto children in everybody's household but her own. Those, she seems to think, drop from the clouds."
James Henry Hammond, architect of the "Cotton is King" doctrine, embodied the moral corruption of the slave system. Despite his public defense of slavery as a "positive good," he engaged in sexual relationships with enslaved women-first Sally Johnson, whom he purchased at eighteen, and later her daughter Louisa when she turned twelve. When his wife Catherine discovered this relationship in 1850, she temporarily left him.
The Civil War would ultimately resolve what Lincoln called the "central disturbing cause" of American politics. In his second inaugural address, Lincoln would acknowledge slavery's role with stark clarity: "One-eighth of the whole population were colored slaves, not distributed generally over the Union, but localized in the southern part of it. These slaves constituted a peculiar and powerful interest. All knew that this interest was somehow the cause of the war."
The Fort Sumter crisis, as Larson masterfully demonstrates, was not merely about federal property or states' rights-it was the moment when America finally confronted its original sin, beginning a bloody reckoning that would transform the nation forever.
