The growth versus profitability dilemma haunts every startup budget meeting. Before making this tradeoff, perfect your business model first by focusing on frugality and survival. Once your model works, choose growth if you have a high-margin product with expanding market potential. However, as your business matures, profitability becomes more attractive to avoid constant fundraising and dilution.
Financing your business requires understanding three primary options: equity, debt, and bootstrapping. Staying fresh requires maintaining mental freshness for work, physical health, and personal time away from work. Regular exercise creates a virtuous cycle: more energy, clearer thinking, healthier eating habits, and better sleep. Time away from work is essential-maintaining boundaries by keeping weekends for family, taking completely unplugged vacations, and cultivating outside interests.
Balancing startup leadership with family life presents unique challenges, as both could absorb 100% of your time.
