Notice how offering praise lifts your own spirits-perhaps celebrators are joyous because they celebrate, rather than celebrating because they're naturally joyous.
Acknowledge good work immediately, tying praise to specific actions or behaviors. Express how their actions made you feel. As Jalen, a Silicon Valley "director of people" notes, people often don't realize what they're doing well, so telling them reinforces positive behavior and shows them what to continue.
Not everyone appreciates public praise-introverts might prefer a handwritten note or appreciative email. Delivering praise in a manner that makes someone comfortable shows you truly appreciate them for who they are. Sometimes private praise, like calling a team member's parents to express gratitude, can have profound lasting impact.
Teams need encouragement during difficult times, even when performance isn't perfect. Celebration provides fuel that sustains people through challenges. The story of Marty and Jasmine illustrates how acknowledging even small improvements can turn around a struggling employee's performance.
