Yet crucial differences remain: America imports rather than exports capital, lacks Britain's imperial culture, and tends toward brief interventions rather than sustained governance. The empire ruling today is both more and less than its British predecessor - larger in economy, population, and arsenal, but lacking the drive to export capital, people, and culture to regions needing them most. It is "an empire in denial." Though technology has changed, empire remains as much a reality today as when Britain ruled and made the modern world.
