When we abandon false beliefs, we typically acquire replacement beliefs simultaneously, causing discarded ideas to quickly seem remote and irrelevant. This convenient erasure happens societally too-medical students don't learn outdated theories, reinforcing our tacit assumption that current belief equals true belief.
Between error-blindness, amnesia for our mistakes, lack of an "error" category, and our tendency to overwrite rejected beliefs, it's no wonder wrongness seems to come from outside ourselves rather than from within. Yet error is ultimately an inside job-nobody but you can choose to believe your own beliefs. This makes recognizing our errors an existential crisis rather than merely an intellectual problem-we find ourselves at odds with ourselves, asking "What was I thinking?"
Throughout history, thinkers have conceived of error as arising from a gap: between mortal and divine (Aquinas), between our souls and physical forms (Plato), between words and things (Locke), or between our limited perspective and the whole of reality (Heidegger). Despite their differences, all see error as emerging from the fundamental distance between our minds and the world.

Why We Love Being Right
Why is being right so satisfying? Though not directly tied to our biochemistry like chocolate or sex, the thrill of being right is universal and undiscriminating-we enjoy it regardless of stakes or subject matter. We can even relish being right about unpleasant things. Most of us live in a state of unconsciously assuming we're basically right about everything, all the time. Sometimes this faith is warranted-we navigate daily life successfully and occasionally achieve spectacular rightness. Being right keeps us alive, gratifies our ego, and provides one of life's keenest satisfactions.
Yet our relationship with wrongness is entirely different. We view errors as rare aberrations that make us feel idiotic and ashamed. In our collective imagination, error signifies ignorance, stupidity, moral degeneracy. But this view of error might be our greatest mistake. Far from indicating inferiority, the capacity to err is crucial to human cognition and inextricable from our most humane qualities: empathy, imagination, conviction, and courage. Error is how we learn and change.
Though we acknowledge error's centrality to human experience (we are "human" after all), we respond to our own mistakes as unexpected anomalies-denying, defending, ignoring, or blaming others. Unlike moral transgressions, which have established cultural rituals for penitence, we lack resources for addressing errors. We haven't even mastered saying "I was wrong," preferring strategic additions ("I was wrong, but...") or passive constructions ("mistakes were made") that distance us from our errors.
By contrast, we excel at acknowledging others' errors. If being right is sweet, pointing out someone else's mistake is savory-an addictive combination. The urge to say "I told you so" reflects our delight in being "right squared." Our conflicting feelings of rightness cause tremendous strife-from minor disputes to international conflicts. Our distaste for error and appetite for being right damages relationships; as therapists note, you can either be right or be in a relationship.
This certainty defies probability. Error isn't rare-science's history is littered with discarded theories like the flat earth or geocentric universe. The "Pessimistic Meta-Induction from the History of Science" suggests that today's theories will eventually prove wrong too, a principle that extends to politics, economics, religion, and education. In our individual lives, we constantly outgrow beliefs. Our limited senses, intellects, memories, emotions, and the world's complexity ensure we get things wrong repeatedly.

How Our Senses Deceive Us
In April 1818, Scottish explorer John Ross sailed from London seeking the Northwest Passage. After exploring three sounds in Baffin Bay, Ross claimed to see mountains (which he named "Croker's Mountains") blocking Lancaster Sound. His second-in-command William Parry hadn't seen these mountains, and when Parry returned the following year, he discovered the mountains were a mirage-Ross had seen real mountains, but they were actually 200 miles away.
Ross had fallen victim to a superior (or arctic) mirage, caused by temperature inversions where cold air near the earth's surface meets warmer air above. This phenomenon bends light rays from beyond the horizon, making distant objects visible that would normally be obscured by Earth's curvature. Many explorers have been fooled by such mirages-the Celts sailing to Iceland, Vikings to North America, and Captain Robert Bartlett who in 1939 saw the Icelandic coast from 350 miles away.
Our senses failing us represents the most elementary reason we can be wrong. We often use visual metaphors for knowledge and error-being "enlightened" versus "in the dark"-because we typically accept as true whatever we perceive. But our perceptions aren't passive recordings of reality; they're interpretations. Even looking at the night sky gives us the false impression of a revolving vault with ourselves at the center.
Our perception is not mere sensation but complex interpretation. We automatically recalibrate visual information, preserving size constancy when objects recede and filling in our blind spots through coherencing. These interpretative processes operate below conscious awareness, making us insensitive to potential errors in our perception.
Optical illusions demonstrate how our visual system can be misled despite being designed to serve us well. The checkerboard illusion shows identical gray squares appearing different due to local contrast and shadow adjustment. What makes illusions fascinating is their robustness (knowledge doesn't prevent misperception), consistency (we misperceive them every time), and universality (everyone experiences them similarly).
These perceptual glitches aren't failures but side effects of normally beneficial processes. Inattentional blindness-our inability to see unexpected objects when focused elsewhere-helps us concentrate but can cause serious errors like airplane crashes. Throughout history, illusions have been exploited for power, from ancient religious practices to colonial manipulation.

The Mind's Confabulation Machine
We love to know things, yet our knowledge is fundamentally fallible. Despite evidence that our memories erode in accuracy over time, we defend them with astounding tenacity. The feeling of knowing fills us with conviction whether we're right or not.
This conviction stems from our tendency to take our own certainty as an indicator of accuracy. Though confidence and correctness do correlate somewhat, our certainty merely reflects the existence of a vivid inner picture, not necessarily reality. We've long compared memory to recording technologies-from Plato's wax tablets to modern computers-but these metaphors fundamentally misrepresent how memory works.
Modern neuroscience reveals that memory isn't a single function but multiple distinct processes handled by different brain structures. Rather than retrieving intact stored memories, we actually reassemble them afresh each time we recall them. Vividness may simply be a feature we build into some memories, or may result from how frequently we recall them. Some memories feel "burned on our brain" because forgetting them seems morally unacceptable.
When the feeling of knowing collides with not knowing, we confabulate-spontaneously creating plausible-sounding explanations. Brain-damaged patients like those with Anton's Syndrome or paralyzed patients who deny their condition demonstrate this dramatically, but healthy people confabulate too. Studies show shoppers confidently explaining preferences between identical items, inventing distinctions that don't exist. Most troubling is the "rocklike certitude" with which these fabrications are delivered-even when confronted with evidence of their falsity.
We're remarkably bad at knowing when we don't know something. Rather than experiencing ignorance as blankness, our minds constantly generate stories and explanations. Our "inner writer" produces theories faster than our "inner fact-checker" can verify them. This creates what philosopher William Hirstein calls "mildly confabulatory personalities"-people who can't say "I don't know" and instead produce plausible-sounding responses to everything.
We all engage in this behavior, developing elaborate theories based on minimal information-what the radio show This American Life aptly named "Modern Jackass." Whether discussing string theory without physics training or confidently explaining health topics we barely understand, we routinely overextend beyond our knowledge. These intellectual improvisations can sometimes help us solve problems, but they often harden into convictions we defend vigorously, especially when challenged.

The Power and Peril of Belief
Belief forms the atomic unit of our intelligence-and of our errors. When we claim to know something, we're essentially saying we can't be wrong about it. But as the 2008 financial crisis dramatically demonstrated, even our most cherished models can collapse.
Alan Greenspan, once celebrated as "the greatest central banker in history" with "rock-star status," faced a congressional committee in October 2008 amid global economic freefall. Representative Henry Waxman confronted him directly about his rejection of market regulation, a doctrine that had become "holy writ" for nearly twenty years. The markets had imploded, and with them, Greenspan's entire worldview.
"The whole intellectual edifice collapsed," Greenspan admitted, finding himself "in a state of shocked disbelief" after forty years of evidence that seemed to confirm his model. When Waxman bluntly stated "your ideology was not right," Greenspan could only agree: "Precisely."
Beliefs are our mental models of the world-maps that guide our actions. They come in two forms: explicit beliefs we consciously hold (like Greenspan's market philosophy), and implicit beliefs we never think about (like assuming our mattress is solid). Though we experience these differently, they function identically as pixels in our picture of reality.
The distinction collapses in moments of error. When an implicit belief fails-imagine suddenly falling through your mattress-it instantly becomes explicit. Both types of beliefs serve as predictive models with real consequences, from the $300 million Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (built on belief in general relativity) to our most intimate self-conceptions.
Our beliefs extend far beyond practical matters into a "General Theory of Us"-organizing our identities and emotional lives. This explains why we even maintain "distal beliefs" about remote subjects we'll never act upon. Like our sex drive, which produces far more copulation than reproduction, our "theorizing instinct" generates abundant beliefs because theory-making was evolutionarily crucial. Our ancestors needed to determine which berries were safe and what rustling bushes signified; today, we theorize about everything from supernovas to strangers' intentions.

The Confirmation Bias Trap
Though we excel at creating mental models of the world, we struggle to recognize that we've made them. Our beliefs often feel not constructed but reflected, as if our minds were simply mirrors showing reality. Psychologists call this "naive realism"-an automatic tendency rather than a philosophical position.
The "'Cuz It's True Constraint" reveals why we're so convinced our beliefs must be right. This constraint has several key stipulations: it applies only to beliefs we currently hold (we can easily see past beliefs as biased), only to specific beliefs (not our beliefs in general), and only to our own beliefs (not others'). We can readily attribute biased motives to others' beliefs, creating what psychologists call "the bias blind spot."
We look into our hearts and see objectivity; we look at our beliefs and see reality. This confusion of our models with the world itself triggers a cascade of assumptions about those who disagree with us: the Ignorance Assumption (they just lack information), the Idiocy Assumption (they're too stupid to understand), and the Evil Assumption (they're willfully rejecting truth). These assumptions make it nearly impossible to accept our own fallibility. If being wrong means being ignorant, idiotic, or evil, no wonder we resist acknowledging our errors.
Confirmation bias-giving more weight to evidence supporting our beliefs than challenging them-is often sensible. We hold beliefs because earlier evidence suggested they're true, and probability theory tells us earlier evidence deserves more weight.
But this undermines our ideal of the neutral thinker who assesses evidence objectively. Thomas Kuhn demonstrated in "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions" that preexisting theories are necessary for scientific inquiry-they tell us what questions to ask, what evidence to seek, and how to interpret findings. The discovery of Neptune exemplifies how theory guided astronomers to look in precisely the right place.
Confirmation bias manifests in multiple ways. Sometimes we literally fail to see contradictory evidence, as Western astronomers did with celestial changes for centuries while Chinese astronomers recorded them. Sometimes we dismiss counterevidence through the "No True Scotsman" fallacy, preserving beliefs by claiming exceptions aren't relevant. Sometimes we interpret counterevidence as actually supporting our position-like President Bush claiming increased violence in Iraq showed enemy frustration with American success, or NASA officials viewing shuttle damage as proof of its strength rather than a design flaw.

The Social Dimension of Error
The Swiss case of women's suffrage illustrates how community membership shapes our beliefs. Despite being one of the world's oldest democracies, Switzerland didn't grant women voting rights until 1971-decades after most democratic nations. Some Swiss cantons held out even longer, with Appenzell Innerrhoden finally forced by the Supreme Court to enfranchise women in 1990, seven centuries after Swiss men began voting.
This striking example shows how beliefs we now consider self-evident can vary dramatically between communities, raising troubling questions about how our ideas shift not with evidence but with mere geography.
Our beliefs are profoundly shaped by our communities-often arbitrarily based on where we were born and raised, as Montaigne observed. But the relationship works both ways: we form communities around shared beliefs, a phenomenon sociologists call "homophily"-the tendency to like people like ourselves.
Despite claiming to value diversity, most Americans live in homogeneous "landslide counties" where one political party dominates. These communities of belief offer practical advantages (professional opportunities, political power) and crucial emotional benefits (comfort, understanding, security). These benefits provide powerful incentives to maintain faith with those around us-even when doing so leads us into error.
Solomon Asch's experiments demonstrate how we see things as those around us see them, even among strangers and with groups as small as three people. When the judgment concerns simple facts like line lengths, we conform to peer pressure. This effect becomes vastly more powerful when beliefs come from large communities with shared history and culture, and when applied to complex, ambiguous evidence rather than simple visual comparisons.
Communities foster wrongness through a four-part "disagreement deficit": First, they expose us disproportionately to support for our own ideas. Second, they shield us from outside disagreement-we rarely read materials challenging our beliefs or socialize with ideological opponents. Third, we disregard outside challenges we do encounter, often becoming more extreme in response to external pressure. Fourth, communities suppress internal dissent through groupthink.

The Seductive Allure of Certainty
The chapter opens with a historical example of how certainty can lead to extremism. When the Roman Empire imposed taxes on Jews in Judaea in AD 6, most reluctantly complied, but Judas of Galilee led a rebellion, establishing a sect dedicated to absolute liberty and recognizing only God as their ruler. While seemingly honorable, this group-the original Zealots-practiced extreme violence against not only Romans but fellow Jews they deemed collaborators, killing hundreds of women and children in raids.
The Zealots' legacy wasn't ideological but methodological-they epitomized murdering in the name of faith. Their modern counterparts share one fundamental conviction: absolute certainty they alone possess truth. The word "zealot" itself means "jealous of truth." This certainty forms the binary code of extremism-us/them, good/evil-with right/wrong as its foundation.
While everyday certainty seems far removed from zealotry, they're closely connected. When we believe unshakably in our rightness, we easily conclude that opposing views are dangerous falsehoods that must be silenced. History overflows with bloodshed rationalized by absolute convictions, from religious crusades to genocides. Yet these aren't perpetrated by superhuman institutions but by ordinary humans exploiting the certainty-or longing for it-within each of us.
Certainty begins with the feeling of knowing but becomes amplified and externalized. It deadens imagination and empathy, making others' stories irrelevant. Even in everyday arguments, certainty transforms us into smug, patronizing versions of ourselves. Despite philosophers condemning it as intellectually indefensible and morally dangerous, we remain drawn to certainty's allure.
William James offered a partial defense of certainty through his example of a hiker facing a crevasse. When retreat is impossible, absolute belief in one's ability to leap becomes advantageous. Sometimes unshakable faith helps "make the truth which they declare"-whether overcoming personal challenges or driving social change.
Ludwig Wittgenstein argued that sometimes uncertainty itself is absurd. Some beliefs must serve as bedrock for our worldview; we use them to answer all other questions. "At the foundation of well-founded belief lies belief that is not founded." His example was his conviction he had two hands-a belief so fundamental that attempting to verify it creates an absurd regression of doubt.

Transforming Through Error
While previous chapters explored how we get things wrong through our senses, minds, and allegiances, this chapter examines the actual moment when the feeling of being right transforms into the feeling of being wrong-that crucial psychological turning point where part of our past self dies and our future self begins to emerge.
This moment proves almost impossible to describe. As noted earlier, we can't say "I am wrong" in the present tense-by recognizing a belief is false, we simultaneously stop believing it. Our beliefs typically change either too gradually or too suddenly to isolate the actual encounter with error.
With gradual belief change, our convictions erode imperceptibly over time, like mountains becoming meadows. Memory-our internal "time-lapse photography"-fails us precisely when we need it most. Studies show people consistently misremember their past beliefs, retroactively aligning them with current views.
With sudden belief change, we leap from one certainty to another so quickly that the error itself barely registers. As Thomas Kuhn observed about scientists, they "never renounce the paradigm that led them into crisis" until "an alternate candidate is available." Scientific theories rarely collapse from inadequacy alone-they fall only when better beliefs replace them.
We almost never find ourselves between theories. Rather than assess beliefs on their merits, we choose among them, clinging to current ones until something better arrives. This strategy narrows wrongness to mere nanoseconds.
Occasionally though, we fall into the chasm between beliefs-the terrain of pure wrongness where a belief has collapsed and we have nothing to replace it. This happens with truly important beliefs, collapsing like stars and leaving only us and a black hole behind. This space of unresolved wrongness is characterized by "chronic terror" and profound disorientation, as Anita Wilson described after losing her evangelical faith without having a replacement worldview ready.
In this state, we're lost twice over: once in the world and again in ourselves. We become like toddlers lost in Manhattan-small, vulnerable, and confused by the immensity around us. Yet this painful state can be redemptive, making us young again in both difficult and wonderful ways. It strips us of all theories, including theories about ourselves, creating the possibility for real change and self-discovery.

The Gift of Error
The paradox at the heart of error management is that to eliminate mistakes, we must first accept their inevitability. This principle is illustrated through a wrong-side surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where the surgeon immediately acknowledged the error and hospital leadership communicated it transparently to staff and media. Unlike the medical profession's traditional culture of concealment, BIDMC had committed to eliminating all preventable harm by 2012, beginning with acknowledging all the ways patients could be harmed. This approach mirrors successful error-prevention strategies in high-risk fields like aviation, which developed strict protocols after the catastrophic 1977 Tenerife collision, and business quality-control systems like Six Sigma, which aims for just 3.4 errors per million opportunities.
The principles that prevent errors-open communication, transparency, and empowering everyone to speak up-mirror the foundations of democracy itself. This is no coincidence; democratic governance emerged partly as a response to human fallibility. Medieval Europe's Divine Right of Kings doctrine implied that rulers chosen by God were infallible. As European politics secularized, Enlightenment thinkers addressed political error. America's founding ideal rejected supposedly infallible single rulers in favor of an openly fallible body politic. Thomas Jefferson believed "truth is great and will prevail" through "free argument and debate."
The relationship between wrongness and comedy runs deep. From sitcoms to jokes about penguins in bars to linguistic errors like asking if someone "breaks out in chives," we've all experienced error as funny. This isn't coincidental-something inherently comedic exists in the nature of error, and something error-like exists in comedy itself. Philosophers have long tried to understand this connection, from the "superiority theory" (we laugh at others' mistakes to feel better about ourselves) to the "self-improvement theory" (comedy shows us our errors to correct them). Most compelling is the "incongruity theory," which suggests comedy arises from the mismatch between expectation and reality-precisely the structure of error itself.
The gap between perception and reality creates not just error but art itself. Keats called this "Negative Capability"-the capacity to dwell in uncertainties and doubts without reaching irritably for facts and reason. Unlike those who embrace error to curtail it, Keats recognized error and art as conjoined twins, vital to each other's existence. This view resonates across artistic traditions: Szymborska claimed inspiration is born from "I don't know," while Anne Carson declared poetry itself "is error"-acknowledging that words are inherently imperfect translations of reality, that truth always wiggles away from the page, and that poetry, like error, startles and unsettles.
Error is uniquely human. Neither God (all-knowing), animals (lacking self-awareness of mistakes), nor machines (lacking emotional responses to contradictory information) experience wrongness as we do. Our capacity to err reflects our ability to imagine things that don't exist-to "hatch crazy ideas, pursue pipe dreams, speculate wildly." Unlike androids that self-destruct when confronted with contradictions, humans self-create and self-re-create through error. As Benjamin Franklin noted, mistakes are "the pure and simple creation of the mind" where "the soul has room enough to expand herself." This parallels evolutionary theory, where genetic errors create variation enabling species adaptation and survival. For humans, mistakes enable not just biological evolution but social, emotional, and intellectual growth as well.
