Talented employees with strong morale are our greatest assets. They embrace action, bring energy to tasks, and make decisions aligned with strategic goals. Studies consistently show correlations between employee morale and financial performance-from Towers Perrin's finding of connections between morale and shareholder returns to evidence that companies on Fortune's "Best 100 Companies to Work For" list significantly outperformed market averages.
Good morale cannot be constructed directly but requires four building blocks: rewards (extrinsic incentives), tasks (the work itself), community (loyalty and belonging), and Purpose. Purpose helps innovators see beyond current conventions, improving innovation quality while countering the natural risk aversion large companies have toward innovation. Purpose adds a fourth dimension to the mental space of innovation (beyond technology, customers, and competition understanding), making it easier to think outside existing conventions. If your company lacks clear Purpose, you must first understand why you need one. Leaders pursuing greatness inevitably recognize they cannot excel in all ways-some Purpose must be chosen. The development process follows eight essential steps:
1. Review your strategy to reveal unconscious predispositions toward particular forms of Purpose.
2. Draw out implications for your Community of Purpose, recognizing which Purposes you cannot credibly fulfill.
